GMIA Power Plant/ Milwaukee, WI

With the 5,000-car parking structure expansion at General Mitchell International Airport, the facility’s power plant needed to be relocated. The existing power plant was demolished and a replacement facility constructed next to the International Arrivals Terminal.

Since the new power plant location is highly visible from the exit roadways as well as from the International Arrivals Terminal, it was decided that the building needed to present an intriguing architectural presence. Although, the 17,000-square-foot building is a simple box, the four primary building materials: pre-cast concrete wall panels; glass; aluminum framing; and aluminum louvers create an interesting pattern of light and texture. The glass expanses on the south and east sides expose the inner workings of the power plant that are illuminated at night.
