Some local business leaders, especially those with a presence on Milwaukee’s Near West Side, are touting the myriad benefits a new $164 million Milwaukee State Office Building would have on the neighborhood.

Wauwatosa’s Community Development Authority on Wednesday voted to continue negotiations with Mandel Group, selecting it over the other three proposals.

This formerly City-owned blighted building was transformed into a much needed breakfast café. LBWN’s investment in Milwaukee’s Silver City Neighborhood supported renovations to the building, legitimized resident demand for small businesses, and catalyzed new private market investment in the surrounding buildings.

The Hmong American Peace Academy (HAPA) celebrated the construction of their 99,000 sq. ft. school addition. The project broke ground started earlier this year on the 38-classroom building which will serve as a high school, attached to the former Samuel Morse Middle School that HAPA has long occupied.

Despite the pandemic, construction has continued on new projects in the Milwaukee area. Although many of us are more focused on this health crisis, social unrest, and economic turmoil – we’re still experiencing a shortage of affordable housing.

Direct Supply recently undertook a major renovation of its downtown Milwaukee Information & Technology Center to turn the historic building into a “giant technological sandbox,” including secret passages, a coffee shop with downtown roots, local beer and root beer on tap and even a Betty White mural.

Renovations to Boebel Hall are set to begin in the upcoming weeks on the UW-Platteville campus. The $23.7 million project will renovate existing laboratory and classroom space to become instructional laboratories, preparation and support space, research and undergraduate research space and one general assignment classroom.
